HOW DO YOU BECOME MORE DISCIPLINED?

It seems like every day I hear someone say to themselves…

  • “Gosh! I just need to be more disciplined!”
  • “Why can’t I just get out of my own way?”
  • “I know what I need to do, I just don’t do it!”
  • “What is wrong with me?”

I don’t think I need to tell you how important discipline is for your life. You already know that. That’s why you’re reading this, isn’t it? And the truth is, there’s nothing wrong with you. What you will discover in this article is a new way of thinking about yourself, your habits and your mindset. A new way of operating and performing. A way to get out of your own way and crush the goals that you have set for yourself and others.

What you need to know though, is that the ideas and strategies I give you in this article, are not my opinion. They are battle tested and proven across all walks of life; Sports, business, fitness and health, spirituality and any other area that might require discipline from you.

What you also need to know, is that for many people, discipline is not what they think it is. They think it’s doing things you don’t want to do because that’s what they are supposed to do. And that couldn’t be further from the truth.  So if you’re ready, let’s begin with what discipline is and walk the journey together from there. Shall we?

DISCIPLINE IS A CHOICE

Discipline is a way of living. It is a choice. Please don't mistake discipline with motivation. Motivation will leave you in the times that you need it most. Discipline is an asset that will stand by your side, is loyal and will serve you very well. Developing discipline is a lasting effort. Having motivation is temporary. Motivation is a lot like candy. It tastes good in the moment but it'll make you fat and give you cavities. Discipline will make you lean, strong and persistent. Discipline says “I will do the activities and stay true to my commitment long after the mood of motivation to do it is gone.” If you are having a problem being disciplined and staying consistent, Here’s a few questions that I want you to ask yourself:

1. Is my environment set up to allow me to be disciplined? If your environment is not set up for you to win, winning is not an option. What do you see when you walk into a gym? Do you see a donut shop? How about an ice cream shop? Of course not! You see workout machines, pictures of fit people, trainers, coaches Etc. The environment is set up for you to win. Is your environment setup for you to execute on your disciplines?

2. Who can I enroll in the activities with me so that I can be more consistent? Accountability increases when you have to meet somebody or you do the activity with somebody. That's why so many people have gym partners. That's why so many people have role play and sales call partners. Because it works. Who can you enroll in the activities that are more consistent than you are and better at the discipline than you are to naturally raise your level of discipline?

3. How easy are the steps to execute my discipline? Remove the steps that create resistance. Is your alarm clock right next to your bed so that you can hit the snooze easily and go back to sleep? Or is it across the room in your bathroom where you have to walk on the cold tile floor to get to it? Which scenario do you think will get you out of bed more effectively? If the steps or system that you use for the discipline gives you room for resistance, you're setting yourself up to fail. Create the steps necessary to make the discipline easy and effortless.

For my final thoughts in this article, to help you become more disciplined, I want to give you some advice. A secret that I discovered when I was still playing professional baseball. One day I was out on the field during batting practice with the team and I was running and hustling all over the field and my manager at the time stopped me and said “David, how come every time I see you, you are always smiling, playing around and in a goofy mood? This supposed to be a job, you know?” He smiled at me and walked away.  I thought about it later. I wasn't always so happy and goofy and playful on a baseball field. When I was still an amateur I was very serious, I’d get mad and I’d take things personally. But when I got to the professional level I had the realization that I seem to perform at a higher level when I am being free and easy and effortless and flowing. When I'm unattached to the outcome. When I'm just goofing off and being goofy and having a good time. That's my state that I'm most effective in. That's the state that I'm most consistent and disciplined in. And it's the state that puts my mindset in a position for me to execute and play the game at a high level. At the same time, I noticed that there were other players who had to get mad. They would literally have to imagine bad things and get angry to be able to put themselves in a focused and disciplined state. As weird as that seemed to me, I couldn't deny that it was effective for them. But that state made me malfunction. Being goofy and playful for them made them malfunction.

So the question is, what state works best for you? Do you need to be playful and easy and effortless and flowing? Or do you need to get mad, concerned or, worried? While these states might not be effective for me, they might be effective for you. If you can crack this code for yourself and figure out what state you have to put yourself in and what feeling you need to be feeling to execute more consistently, you can unlock the key to discipline very quickly. Because all you need to do when you want to be more disciplined is to put yourself in your "go-to state” that puts you in the zone. You learn to do that my friend, and you will become unstoppable!
